I have just arrived home from Padang, West Sumatera, where approximately 700 others and I gathered for the 9th National Accounting Symposium. Not so big, I think, but professionally run and full of smart people having great conversations. It was my first experience of this symposium and I was much impressed with the commitment and dedication so evident in those entrusted with navigating accounting research and education through the challenging corporate governance of today’s reality.

On the day two, I also presented a paper on strategic alignment issue written by me and Professor Jogiyanto. As you might know, strategic alignment has had the attention of researcher and practitioners for some 15 years. Our paper reports a survey of strategic alignment impacts on organizational performance in Indonesian banking industry. You can download the paper here and the presentation file here.

Anyway, the place itself is amazing. You don’t realize how big and beautiful Padang is until you go on walks and hikes. The staff is also wonderful and the food was great. The coffee was simply amazing. One participant had complained about kids, but there were no kids when we were there. We met amazing people when we were there who we will remain friends with. I’m a lucky, lucky man to get to hang out with so many smart people.

To all the people I met, it was great talking with you. Let’s do it again sometime. See you at the 10th National Accounting Symposium next year in Makassar.
